ANCIENT INDIANS tribes did inhabit Southwest Louisiana. Artifacts were significant enough for two (2) archeological digs. One was on the north shores of Lake Charles before Harrah's was built. Another dig was on the Calcasieu River in Moss Bluff area. Before the topography was disturbed in Moss Bluff, in the woods, arrowheads were common finds and also in Sam Houston State Park.

My family's roots (documented through land transactions) can be traced back in time as inhabitants of Southwest Louisiana - MOSS BLUFF before Louisiana gained state-hood in 1802. My true heritage is unknown. Were my families of slavery or were they NATIVE AMERICANS of this region? Could I be a descendant of the ATAKAPA? Many of us really don't know.

Mrs. Orsot is neither White, Black nor Colored. She is an ATAKAPA INDIAN. As a neighbor, she giggles at the Historical Plaque (Pine Street Pavilion) on the lake here in Lake Charles which claims the ATAKAPA to be extinct. She begans to tell the story as it really happened: "My grandfather was the ATAKAPA Chief who knew of the soldiers coming in to 'slaughter' them. When soldiers got there, the village lay about moaning & groaning with the spots. Thinking that they were already dying of the dreaded SMALLPOX disease, they immediately left them to finish dying - instead of killing them. Afterwards, the ATAKAPAS scattered themselves for their own protection."

Laughingly, she continues, "They didn't really have the smallpox, they had 'stained' themselves with the berries from the Mulberry trees. They 'fooled' the soldiers and that time it worked!"

D. W. (as I have affectionately called him from his childhood) has developed one of the most beautiful BLOG sites to enjoy ... OVER IN BAHRAIN. By night time here, it is the morning of the next day there. WOW!!!! His first pix to me was of a serious SANDSTORM (common to that regions). Like hurricanes and tornados, they, too, can do many damages. I thought this merchandise to be interesting. From his site, double-click on the image & go "HOLY SMOKES!!!!" Girls!! Instead of long distance calls, we almost communicate daily over the internet with our YAHOO MESSENGER. At first it was the fun of talking to my friend over in a FOREIGN COUNTRY and exploring my curiousity about living elsewhere and what it was like. I can even read their newspaper without 'subscriptions' ... for FREE: http://gulf-daily-news.com. It seems as though Malls are changing tradition and further dividing the 'haves' from the 'havenots'. More Bahrainians have cars and are getting away from open-air marketplaces.

-Well, it seems that he went over on special assignment as a medical expert (R.N.) and ended up retiring & starting a new career(s). He is exploring the wonderful world of fashion design and other venues as well. The catalog he is working on now is really hot ... ask him for a copy!

He has mainstreamed and adapted well to the local customs. To many of us, going to Public Prayer daily would be extremely regimented; but to him, it has become very normal and it's scheduled into his day (like us having breakfast).

Sure he misses home; but, what he misses the most is MUSIC ... JAZZ, BLUES, & GOSPEL. Sharing our collections via downloads (since transmissions are somewhat slow) was a task ... soooooooooooo, he came up with his BLOG which truly opened up our lines of communication ... CONVERSATIONS ... PICTURES FROM BAHRAIN ... &&&&&&&&& MUSIC!!!

THE WHS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION WILL AWARD $1500. 00 SCHOLARSHIPS (2) TO STUDENTS OF WASHINGTON-MARION MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL.

The scholarship committee (Ivy Page-Mouton, Evelyn Jones-Thomas, Alvin Stevens, and Norma Allison-Randle) are now soliciting applications and will evaluate the merits of each candidate.

An update was given on our first three (3) recipients of $1,000 each are still in school and are high achievers to date.

Other fundraisers will generate additional funds to increase the scholarships awards.
